Rear Admiral [Ret.] James J. Carey

Rear Admiral [Ret.] James J. Carey Rear Admiral [Ret.] James J. Carey is the Former Chairman of the U. S. Federal Maritime Commission [FMC]. He was appointed to the Commission by President Ronald Reagan and confirmed by the United States Senate in 1981 to serve as a Commissioner at the FMC. He was elected by his fellow Commissioners to serve as the agency Vice Chairman in 1983 and appointed by President Reagan in 1985 and again confirmed by the United States Senate to serve a 2nd term. In 1989, Admiral Carey was appointed by newly elected President George H. W. Bush to serve as Chairman of the FMC, a position he held until 1991.

Admiral Carey’s military career began in 1961 when he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and was later selected to attend Officers Candidate School in April of 1962. He was commissioned an ENSIGN in 1962 and reported aboard the U. S. S. Topeka [CLG-8] that same year where he served for two deployments to the South China Sea and Vietnam. He transitioned to the Naval Reserve in 1966 to pursue a business and national public policy career, yet continued his military service through seven separate commands, the last being the 10,000 Member Readiness Command Region SIX at the Washington Navy Yard during Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM. He holds four awards of the LEGION of MERIT and retired after 34 years service at the Washington Navy Yard in October, 1994.

Admiral Carey currently serves as Chairman of the NATIONAL DEFENSE COMMITTEE in Washington, DC, Chairman of NATIONAL DEFENSE PAC, National Co-Chairman of THE FLAG AND GENERAL OFFICERS’ NETWORK , and Chairman of the Future Leaders for America Foundation and the Washington Scholars Fellowship Program.  He is also the Former Grand Prior of the Knights Templar Order in the United States [www.smotj.org], the Former Grand Commander and current Grand Master of the Knights Templar Order Worldwide [www.osmth.org].  In addition, he has served as the National President of his College Fraternity, Zeta Psi,  National President of the Naval Reserve Association, and President for Six Terms of the Reagan Administration Presidential Appointees Organization.  He also belongs to four internationally recognized High-IQ Societies, American Mensa [98th percentile], Intertel [99th percentile] , The 999 Society [99.9th percentile], and the International Society of Philosophical Enquiry [99.9th percentile].

Admiral Carey is married to Arlene Patricia Brooks and has two daughters, Lynn Margaret Carey, a TV Newscaster for CBS News Channel 4 in Denver, CO, and Sarah Ann Carey Cancel, a teacher of the hearing and mentally impaired in San Diego, CA.
